Shortage of skilled talent

In the current labour market there is a major shortage of skilled talent. The companies with all the capital are battling with each other to win over the highest skilled and experienced developers, who often will leave for another opportunity that pays even more. In the remote work environment of today, people in Alberta can work for any company in the US or Europe as well, making the issue even more troubling. Local companies just can’t compete in that complex labour market. Those who try, need to pass along the enormous costs to their customers, make less profit, or both. If we, as an ecosystem, do not find ways to address the labour shortage, it is going to stifle innovation and seriously affect our ability to compete and further impede the growth of startup investment in Alberta.

The NIM solution

We believe that there is an obvious solution to this problem. But there needs to be some short-term accommodation by Alberta businesses, which will prove fruitful in the not-so-distant future. Alberta educational institutions and bootcamps like InceptionU Educational Foundation are adding new software developers by the dozens to the local ecosystem each year. By investing in that new talent now, two or three years into the future there will be an abundance of highly skilled and experienced resources right here in our province. They just need a place to start their growth journey.

Some companies see risk with this idea, but New Idea Machine is here to help. Our experienced senior leadership team can remove some of that risk by helping to mentor and grow this new talent while they work on your industry projects under our supervision. Once they have shown to be reliable and a good culture fit for your company, you can hire them directly. Should a resource not be a great fit, we can provide other options. Al Del Degan – Technology Educated in Computer Science, Al has spent the past 26 years working in technical roles from software development, business analysis, and project management through to various leadership positions. For the past few years Al has been shouting from the rooftops about the value of new developers in the ecosystem. He sees a current gap with companies looking for a minimum of 3-5 years experience, and the ability for new developers to gain that experience. New Idea Machine is his answer to how to fill that gap. Al is also a podcaster, and is currently the creator and producer of the increasingly popular Leaders, Innovators, and Big Ideas Podcast for Rainforest Alberta.

Rea Hailley – Partnerships & Business Dev. Rea is a leader in customer success, business development, and project management, with 20 years of experience. She creatively and efficiently gets shit done! Rea builds solid relationships for long-term mutual success, and is passionate about working with organizations to achieve their goals. Helping to give new developers the opportunity to start their careers, Rea says, will have lasting benefits to the innovation ecosystem.

Carol Sun – Communications & People Carol Sun is a confident leader who invests her time supporting, building, and guiding a dynamic group of people towards triumph in the innovation ecosystem. She epitomizes integrity, energy, and creative service in every detail in the communication realm. Carol has over 20 years of experience in strategic and corporate communications.
