The Moment I Realized How Lost Founders Can Feel

“Can you show me where you put the car oil?”

That was the question the mechanic asked me, completely straight faced.

My car had been leaking oil for weeks. I had already taken it in, paid for repairs, and driven away thinking the issue was resolved. The very next day, I checked the oil and realized it was nearly empty again.

So I went back to the dealership.

They looked it over and told me everything seemed fine.

When I asked where the oil had gone, the mechanic shrugged. And then came the question that caught me off guard.

“Can you show me where you put the car oil?”

I remember standing there, trying not to feel insulted. I do not know everything about cars, but I can read. I know where engine oil goes. Still, I was being treated like the problem must be me.

In that moment, I wished I had a trusted friend who was a mechanic. Someone who would take me seriously, explain what was actually going on, and tell me how to fix it instead of making me doubt myself.

That experience stuck with me.

Because it made me wonder if this is exactly how non technical founders feel when they hire someone to build software. Confused. Frustrated. Second guessing their investment. Unsure whether what they are being told makes sense or not.

When we co founded New Idea Machine, that feeling was front of mind.

We built it with the intention of being a trusted partner. Someone who helps entrepreneurs navigate a complex process, avoid costly mistakes, and end up with a product that actually works.

No one should feel lost or dismissed when they are making critical decisions about their business.
