Software Development Running Over Budget? Where the Money Went
When software development runs over budget, the overrun usually started before the first invoice: a lowball quote designed to win the work, discovery that never happened, or change orders priced at a premium. The way out is not spending more. It is finding out exactly what you have paid for so far.
Why it matters: an overrun handled wrong is how you pay for the same app twice. Once to build it, once to fix it.

Why do software projects go over budget?
Three causes come up again and again:
- The lowball quote. A low number wins your business, then reality arrives as change orders. The quote was never the price. It was the door.
- Skipped discovery. Without documented requirements, every surprise is billable. Building without clear requirements is like hiring a contractor with no blueprints: you will get something, just not what you wanted, and you will pay for every wrong turn.
- The fixed-bid buffer. Fixed bids carry a 30%+ contingency markup built in, and change fees on top. You pay for the development risk either way.
How do you find out where the money went?
Ask for three things, today:
- A list of what has been built against what was planned
- A working demo of everything that exists
- Access to your own code repository
